Holden V8 head bolt tightening sequence: Tighten from the centre bolts outward, alternating side to side in staged passes, with the exhaust side leading — never all at once, never in a circle. Follow the staged sequence in full and use the diagram for your engine.

Centre bolts first, then work outward alternating side to side in staged passes, exhaust side leading. Follow the staged sequence in full rather than final-torquing any bolt in one go, and use the diagram for your specific engine and head.

Should I use head bolts or head studs?

Head bolts are simpler and fine for most street rebuilds. Head studs (commonly ARP) give a more even, repeatable clamp load and are the usual choice for higher-power, boosted or stroker builds. Studs also offer the benefit of pulling on the stud while torquing, not the engine block thread. We stock both for the Holden V8 where available — ask us what suits your power target.
