Lifters Ford FE 390, 427, 428 Big Block
Ford FE 390, 427 & 428 Lifters Category
Lifters for Ford FE 390, 427 and 428 big-block engines, including hydraulic flat tappet, solid flat tappet, hydraulic roller and solid roller designs. Match the lifters to the camshaft, intended RPM range and vavle train system. Or talk to our experienced engine builder sales team.
Important: Check Your FE Block for oil gallery flow.
Ford produced FE blocks for both hydraulic and solid-lifter applications. Some original solid-lifter blocks—particularly early 427 blocks—were not drilled to provide pressurised oil to the lifter galleries. Hydraulic lifters must have this oil supply and cannot simply be installed in an undrilled solid-lifter block.
Check the rear face of the block:
-
Hydraulic-lifter blocks normally have two additional small gallery plugs aligned with the lifter galleries.
-
Original solid-lifter blocks without these plugs may not have drilled lifter oil galleries.
-
Some blocks were drilled but internally plugged or modified for solid lifters, so the external plugs are a useful indicator—not absolute proof.
-
Casting numbers and engine capacity alone are not reliable enough, especially after decades of rebuilding and parts swapping.
Before ordering hydraulic lifters, have the lifter oil passages physically confirmed by an experienced FE engine builder. Converting an undrilled solid-lifter block requires specialised machining; changing lifters alone will not work.
