Description
Comp Cams 7702-1 Pushrod Length Checker tool. Fits LS1, Small Block Chevy Hydraulic Roller and Ford 351C Cleveland Engines.
Precision-crafted pushrod length checking too. Hardened steel alloy then black oxided, this Hi-Tech checking pushrod is adjustable from 6.800" to 7.800" inches with .050" increments. Features ball-ball ends.
How the pushrod length tool works: There are 2 x laser marks on the side of the pushrod. Wind the tool closed which will be the base measruement (both marks line up). Unwind the pushrod tool to your desired length, each turn is 0.050" (50 thou) increase. So count the number of turns and add them to the base measurment to get your desired length to order the corrct pushrods.
How to use the COMP Cams 7702-1 pushrod length checker
The COMP Cams 7702-1 adjusts from 6.800" to 7.800", with each full turn adding 0.050" (50 thou). The two laser marks help you track complete turns.
-
Start fully closed. Gently screw the two halves together until closed. This is the 6.800" base gauge length. Do not overtighten.
-
Set up your valvetrain. Use the intended cylinder heads, head gasket thickness, lifters and rocker arms. Begin with the lifter being checked on the camshaft’s base circle—the section where the valve is fully closed.
-
Adjust the checker. Unwind it to establish the required checking length, following your rocker and lifter manufacturer’s procedure for geometry, lash or preload. Keep within the tool’s adjustment range.
-
Read the length. Carefully remove the checker without changing its adjustment. Wind it fully closed, counting complete and partial turns using the laser marks.
-
Calculate the measurement. Multiply the number of turns by 0.050", then add the 6.800" base length.
Formula: Gauge length = 6.800" + (turns × 0.050")
Example: 10 full turns = 6.800" + 0.500" = 7.300" gauge length.
Before ordering pushrods, confirm the required lifter preload or valve lash and the supplier’s length measurement convention.
Frequently asked questions
Does the checker only adjust in 0.050" increments?
No. Each full turn changes the length by 0.050". Half a turn changes it by 0.025", and a quarter turn by 0.0125".
What are the two laser marks for?
They provide a reference for counting rotations. From an aligned starting position, the marks line up again after each complete turn. Alignment alone does not tell you the length—you must count the turns.
