These hardened stepped washer inserts are used when fitting aftermarket aluminium Windsor cylinder heads to OEM-style Ford 289/302 Windsor blocks that use 7/16" head bolts or head studs.

Most aftermarket Windsor cylinder heads are machined with 1/2" head bolt holes so they can also suit 351 Windsor blocks and Dart-style aftermarket blocks. When those same heads are fitted to a factory-style 289/302 Windsor block, the larger 1/2" head bolt hole needs to be reduced down to suit the smaller 7/16" fastener.

The insert easily pushes into the cylinder head bolt hole and works as a hardened step-down washer / reducing bush. It supports correct head bolt or head stud location, gives the fastener a proper hardened seat, and helps avoid sloppy fitment when using 7/16" Windsor head bolts or studs in aftermarket heads.
