COMP Cams 11-413-8 — Big Block Chevy Hydraulic Roller Camshaft, Towing & Low-End Torque
The COMP Cams 11-413-8 is a mild Xtreme Energy hydraulic roller camshaft for Big Block Chevy engines where low-end torque, throttle response and street manners matter more than big rpm numbers.
Best suited to mild 396, 427 and 454 street, towing, cruiser and heavy vehicle combinations that need clean pull from low rpm without over-camming the engine.
Quick Answer
Use the COMP Cams 11-413-8 when you want a Big Block Chevy hydraulic roller cam with strong low-rpm and mid-range torque, good idle quality and a useful 1,200–5,200 rpm operating range. It is a sensible choice for mild 396, 427 and 454 BBC builds where towing, cruising and street response are the priority.

Towing & Low-End Torque
The COMP Cams 11-413-8 is built around usable torque, not big rpm bragging rights. With 212° / 218° duration at .050" and a 1,200–5,200 rpm operating range, it keeps the working powerband low enough for towing, cruising and heavier BBC street cars.
For a mild 454, this cam suits buyers who want throttle response, clean low-rpm pull and better mid-range without turning the engine into an over-cammed pig. It is a practical cam for a Big Block Chevy that still needs to drive properly.
Features & Benefits
- 212° / 218° duration @ .050": Keeps the cam mild enough to build cylinder pressure early, helping low-speed torque and throttle response.
- .510" / .510" valve lift: Gives the BBC enough lift to breathe better without going too large for a towing or cruiser-style setup.
- 110° lobe separation: Helps give the engine stronger mid-range character while keeping the cam usable in a mild street engine.
- 1,200–5,200 rpm range: Puts the working range where a heavy street car, tow vehicle or cruiser actually spends time.
- Hydraulic roller design: Reduces flat tappet break-in concerns and supports modern hydraulic roller lobe design.
- 3-bolt cam gear attachment: Uses a common performance cam gear attachment style, but the timing set must still be matched to the engine and cam setup.
Big Block Chevy Fitment
The COMP Cams 11-413-8 suits mild Big Block Chevy 396, 427 and 454 combinations where low-end torque, street manners and mid-range pull are the priority.
It is a good direction for tow-style builds, cruisers, boats, street rods and heavier vehicles where the engine needs to work from low rpm. It is not the cam to choose if the goal is rough idle, big rpm and maximum top-end horsepower.
Buyer Checks Before Ordering
Check your engine generation, compression ratio, cylinder heads, valve springs, rocker gear, pushrod length, distributor gear, timing set and lifter choice before ordering.
Earlier Mark IV-style Big Block Chevy combinations are not the same as later factory hydraulic roller Gen VI engines. Depending on the engine, a hydraulic roller cam conversion may require matching lifters, correct cam retention, suitable timing parts and the correct distributor gear.
Do not buy a cam on duration numbers alone. A towing or low-end torque build needs the cam, compression, converter, diff gears, intake and exhaust matched properly.
Converter & Driveline Notes
The COMP Cams 11-413-8 is a mild hydraulic roller cam with a low 1,200 rpm starting range, so it is much more converter-friendly than larger BBC cams.
Converter choice still depends on vehicle weight, gearing, tyre size, compression and how the vehicle is used. For towing and heavy street use, the cam, converter and gearing should be matched properly so the engine pulls cleanly instead of labouring under load.
Springs, Lifters & Valvetrain Notes
Lifters are not included with this camshaft, and valve springs are required. The springs must be matched to the cam lift, installed height, open pressure, seat pressure and the rest of the valvetrain.
Do not assume old factory springs are good enough. The wrong springs can cause valve float, poor performance and valvetrain damage. Pushrod length, rocker geometry and retainer-to-seal clearance should also be checked during assembly.
Torque Cam Choice
For towing, heavy vehicles and low-rpm street use, a smaller hydraulic roller cam like the COMP Cams 11-413-8 is often the smarter choice than a larger cam with more duration.
A bigger cam may sound tougher, but it can move the powerband higher, reduce low-speed response and make the engine feel lazy if the compression, converter and gearing are not there to support it. For a mild 454 that needs to pull from low rpm, this cam is aimed at useful torque over top-end noise.
